YouTube Watch Hours Calculator
Find out when your channel will reach the Partner Program's watch-time threshold — 4,000 hours today, 8,000 hours for new applicants from February 1, 2027 — and how many views a day it takes.
Daily views you need
With your average view duration, you need about — long-form views per day to earn 4,000 hours in a year, and about — views per day for 8,000 hours.
Shorts thresholds (90-day window)
Estimates assume your current pace stays the same and that hours already earned stay within the rolling 365-day window. In reality, old watch time drops out of the window and pace changes, so re-check monthly.
How the calculator works
Watch hours are simply views multiplied by how long people watch:
Daily watch hours = daily long-form views × average view duration (minutes) ÷ 60
The calculator adds that daily figure to the public watch hours you already have and estimates the date you'll pass each threshold. It does the same for subscribers using your monthly growth.
The rules it's based on
- Until January 31, 2027: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
- From February 1, 2027 (new applicants): 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
- What doesn't count: watch time from Shorts in the Shorts feed, private or unlisted videos, and deleted videos. Watch time from public live streams that are saved as videos does count.

Why average view duration matters so much
Doubling your average view duration has the same effect on watch hours as doubling your views — and it's often easier. A channel with 300 views a day at 2 minutes earns 10 hours a day; at 4 minutes, 20 hours. Better openings, clearer structure and longer (but not padded) videos all move this number. See CTR vs. watch time.
Frequently asked questions
Do Shorts count toward watch hours?
No. Watch time from Shorts in the Shorts feed doesn't count toward the long-form watch-hours threshold. Shorts have their own path based on Shorts views over 90 days.
What happens if I make a video private?
Its watch time stops counting toward your public watch hours. If you want to hide an old video, it's usually better to wait until after you've been accepted.
Can I buy watch hours?
No. Bought or artificial watch time violates YouTube's policies, is filtered out of the count, and can get a channel rejected or terminated.
