How to find your Kindle email address and approve senders
Short answer: sign in to Amazon, go to Account → Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings. Your Kindle email address (ending in @kindle.com) is listed under "Send-to-Kindle E-Mail Settings". In the same section, add the address you'll send from to the Approved Personal Document E-mail List, or Amazon silently ignores your emails.
Find it on a computer
- Sign in to the Amazon store where your Kindle account lives (Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de…).
- Open Account & Lists → Manage Your Content and Devices (also called "Content & Devices").
- Click the Preferences tab and scroll down to Personal Document Settings.
- Under Send-to-Kindle E-Mail Settings you'll see one address per device and app, for example
yourname_1234@kindle.com. Click Edit to change the part before the @ to something easier to remember.
Each Kindle device and each Kindle app has its own address. Sending to any of them adds the document to your library, so it syncs everywhere as long as Personal Document Archiving is on (it is by default).
Find it on your Kindle
On a Kindle e-reader, open Settings → All Settings → Your Account and look for Send-to-Kindle Email. The menu names change slightly between models and software versions, so if you don't see it, use the computer method above.
Approve the address you send from
To prevent spam, Amazon only accepts documents from addresses on your approved list. Emails from any other address are discarded without warning.
- In Personal Document Settings, find Approved Personal Document E-mail List.
- Click Add a new approved e-mail address.
- Enter the exact address you'll send from (for example your Gmail) and click Add Address.
Services that email documents to Kindle for you will ask you to add their sending address here too.
How to email documents to your Kindle
- Create a new email from an approved address to your
@kindle.comaddress. - Attach the file: PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTML, EPUB, or images (JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP). MOBI files are no longer accepted.
- Send it. Subject and body can be empty. Up to 25 attachments and 50 MB per email.
If something goes wrong, Amazon usually emails the sender an explanation, and it sometimes asks you to confirm a request by clicking a link. If nothing shows up, check that inbox and its spam folder.
Emailing to Kindle not working? Checklist
- Sender not approved: the most common cause. Double-check the exact address, including aliases. Mail sent "as" an alias may come from a different address.
- Typo in the Kindle address: copy it from the Preferences page rather than typing it.
- File too big: over 50 MB in total won't go through. Use the web uploader (up to 200 MB) instead. See how to send a PDF.
- Unsupported or broken file: MOBI isn't accepted anymore, and EPUBs with errors fail conversion. Fixes: Send to Kindle error E999.
- Looking in the wrong place: documents appear under Documents in your library, not with your books, and not in Kindle for Web. See where to find them.
Skip email entirely
For web articles you don't need your Kindle address at all. Leafpost uses Amazon's Send to Kindle service with your Amazon sign-in in Chrome, so there's no address to look up and no sender to approve. Open the article, click, and it's on your Kindle.
FAQ
Is my Kindle email address private?
Treat it like a private address. Only approved senders can deliver to it, but there's no reason to publish it.
Can I change my Kindle email address?
Yes. Click Edit next to it in Personal Document Settings and choose a new name before @kindle.com. Remember to update any service that sends to the old one.
What's the @free.kindle.com address?
It was meant for delivery over Wi-Fi only, back when some Kindles had paid cellular delivery. Personal documents are now delivered over Wi-Fi, so the regular @kindle.com address is the one to use.
