Send to Kindle documents not showing up? Here's where they are

Short answer: documents you send aren't mixed in with your books. Open your Kindle library and use the filter to show Documents (or Docs). They appear on Kindle devices and the Kindle phone and tablet apps, but not in Kindle for Web (read.amazon.com). If the document isn't there after a few minutes, check its status at amazon.com/sendtokindle → Recently sent files.

1. Look in the right place

2. Check the delivery status

Open amazon.com/sendtokindle (or your local store) and expand Recently sent files. Each upload shows whether it's in your library or failed. A failure with code E999 means the file couldn't be converted. Here's how to fix E999.

3. Sync your device

4. Same account, same store

If you have more than one Amazon account, or you sent from a different country's store (Amazon.com vs Amazon.co.uk, for example), the document went to that account's library. Sign in to the store your Kindle is registered to and send again.

5. Emailed documents

If you emailed the file, the sender address must be on your approved list, and the email must be under 50 MB. Unapproved emails are dropped silently. Checklist: Kindle email address and approved senders.

6. Personal Document Archiving

In Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings, Personal Document Archiving should be enabled. That's what saves documents to your cloud library so they reach every device. It's on by default.

Sending web articles?

Leafpost sends web pages through Amazon's Send to Kindle service with "add to library" on, so they appear under Documents on every Kindle and app. It also keeps a history of what you sent and whether it succeeded.

FAQ

Can I read sent documents in a browser?

Not in Kindle for Web, which only shows books. Use the free Kindle app on your phone or tablet.

How do I delete a sent document?

Long-press it in the Kindle app or on your Kindle and use the delete or remove option, or delete it from Manage Your Content and Devices → Content → Docs, which removes it everywhere.
